Menorca/ Minorca, Majorca's little sister is a relaxing holiday
destination where you can escape from the nightlife and bars elsewhere in the
Balearic islands and enjoy the natural environment, warm seas and
soothing sun. Discover the island in out online Menorca travel guide. Only 48kms from tip to toe Menorca Spain is perfect
for walking holidays, cycling or horse riding, not to forget Minorca's
fabulous beaches.
The Northern half of Menorca island is rugged with many small beaches
and rocky outcrops. The sands are reddish and pines grow abundantly.
The small islands off Menorcas northern coast are home to some rare
species such as the wall lizard as well as wild rabbits and goats
and marine birds such as shearwaters, Audouin gulls and Blue Rock
Thrushes. The north is also home to many dune and wetland systems
including the nature reserve of albufera de Es Grau.
The beaches in the north are quiet and more susceptible to wind
and bad weather. Read more about the climate of Menorca spain in thet Menorca's
climate section of our travel guide.
Another feature of Menorca's environment are the caves which provide
a home to unique species of animals that have been isolated from
the sea in salt water caves. The cliffs around Menorca's coast also
offer refuge to a variety of flora and fauna, including many marine
birds that are well worth seeing.
Inland Pine trees (including Pinus ceciliae that grows wild only
on Menorca) abound particularly in the central and north eastern
areas. Oak woodlands are also common as well as areas of wild olive
trees where the land is drier. These are knitted together with agricultural
land divided my old stone walls that some reckon stretch for 1500
kms.
The southern half of the island is more sheltered and is home to
the majority of Menorca's tourist resorts. 30 or more gullies stretch
inland from the sea and again these are home to a rich variety of
flora and fauna including some endemic species. The tourist development
in Menorca spain is on a much smaller scale than development in
Majorca for example and the island remains peaceful.
